When is root canal treatment needed?
Published on: August 24, 2026
Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp, the soft tissue inside a tooth, becomes infected, inflamed, or severely damaged and cannot heal on its own. Deep decay, cracks, repeated dental procedures, or trauma can allow bacteria to reach the pulp and cause these problems.
Common Signs That Indicate a Root Canal
1. Persistent tooth pain, especially while chewing or biting.
2. Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the food or drink is removed.
3. Swelling or tenderness around the tooth or gum.
4. Pus or an abscess near the affected tooth.
5. Tooth discolouration, particularly darkening of the tooth.
6. Pain that occurs spontaneously or becomes worse at night.
However, symptoms alone cannot confirm that you need a root canal. A dentist or root canal specialist may examine the tooth and use dental X-rays or other diagnostic tests to determine whether the pulp is affected and whether the tooth can be saved.
A root canal specialist treats the infected or damaged pulp by removing it, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, filling and sealing them, and then restoring the tooth to protect its remaining structure.
At Smile Journey, our dental team focuses on accurate diagnosis and appropriate root canal treatment to help control infection and preserve your natural tooth whenever possible.
